Do Now: Modernizing Nonviolent Activists & Skewed Authorities Can't wrap your head around how Rosa Parks could be arrested for just sitting on a bus? Think about this and how the specific rules of a time period or group affect the consequences of a seemingly mundane action: On October 16 of this year, NFL football player, Brandon Marshall, was fined $10,500 by the National Football League just for wearing green shoes on the field. Just as Rosa Park's insistence to remain sitting was due to her solidarity with the African-American race, Marshall's refusal to change shoes represented his solidarity to the mental health community. Green is the representative color of Mental Health Awareness Week. Just as Rosa Parks was penalized by the Jim Crow Laws of the South, Marshall was fined by the National Football League. They were punished by the specific authorities to which they were subject. Marshall tweeted his response to the fine, along with a picture of the document. It is pictured to the right. Read the tweet. Why would Marshall be okay with being fined? Why is he accepting it with such grace? Think about why Rosa Parks calmly accepted her arrest after her refusal to give up her seat. How are they both using civil disobedience to make a point? Why didn't Marshall just adhere to the uniform dress code? |
